Gov't Mule sounds better than ever. Their new bass player Jorgen Carlsson has brought them to another level and sounding (dare I say) like the old days of Allen Woody. On the surface there are many differences in the band between now and then. The 1st and major one is obvious for Mule fans, now they're a four piece band, in the old days a three piece. Also the many different directions the band has taken musically and emotionally over the years after Allen. That being said Jorgen brings back a feel to the band that I feel has been missing for some time now. His heavy heart pounding bass lines really bring back the rock n roll, the blues, and the funkiness in Gov't Mule. It really stood out at the beginning of the bass driven "Broke Down On The Brazos". It also stood out well on "Feel Like Breakin Up Somebody's Home". A greasy blues song as Warren put it. "Somebody told me in this part of Virginia they like the greasy blues. Well this is some nasty blues right here".
He wasn't kidding.
Mr Ron Holloway of the DC area joined the band on Saxophone for Sco Mule, Blind Man, Soulshine and for the encore: Take Me To The River. Opener Jackie Greene joining the band for the encore as well. The crowd was more than pleased to see Gov't Mule really rock out a great show. A good crowd indeed for the far suburbs of Washington on a Sunday late afternoon/ early evening. If you missed this one, get out there for a Mule show, the tour runs until new years eve. You can check them out Saturday Sept 4th at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison CO. with The Avett Brothers and Truth and Salvage Co. <(A Chris Robinson production)
